Veterans On the Rise

On Tuesday, April 25, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM,  executive director of Veterans On the Rise, Charles Avery will go on air on News Talk Radio to discuss key issues impacting homeless veterans and veteran mental health care in general. We hope you will tune in to FM 95.9 and AM 1540!

Cherry Blossom Running for VOTR

On Sunday, April 8, Melanie Avery, Director of Public Affairs and sometimes chief everything officer ran the Cheery Blossom 10-miler on behalf of Veterans On the Rise! Her second time running the race, it was a great day for a run in that there was mild weather and virtually no wind.  Melanie also ran this race as a precursor to May which is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. Veterans On the Rise hopes you will join the organization for upcoming volunteer, physical activity, and fundraising efforts.

Airbnb and TJHSST are donating blankets and comforters to VOTR veterans.

As temperatures dropped during the winter TJHSST students gathered warm blankets and coats to share with VOTR veterans.  Community members who would like to donate additional blankets should call the main office of VOTR to schedule a blanket drop off at 202-388-4090.

VOTR game nights turn into great times for mentoring and discussion between veterans and volunteers. We invite those want to participate in the upcoming event to join VOTR on March 23 for a fun-filled night of fellowship and encouragement.

Social interactions help veterans reintegrate into their communities.

Veteran Stand down for health and employment on #GivingTuesday – Seasonal employment opportunity

On the morning of Wednesday, November 28, at 8:30 AM Veterans On the Rise is hosting a Veteran Employment and Heath Stand Down event at our Head Quarters in Washington, DC.  We invite veterans wanting to work four to five, 8-hour days (daytime hours) to please reach out to Veterans On the Rise to participate. The third annual VOTR Veterans Day Cookout will take place on May 28, 2016.

Electrician Apprenticeship Open House


VOTR is hosting an electrician apprenticeship open house on Dec 22, 2015, or 12/22/2015. We will leave from VOTR HQ and a few other locations and arrive in Laurel, MD at some time thereafter. Interested parties should call Ms. Burley to the participant list.  We will provide a light breakfast snack to those who join VOTR on the day of the open house.

Why your support matters

Meet VOTR graduate D.C. who was able to change and rebalance his life at VOTR. After taking a short time to refocus, he was able to increase his VA benefits and set an academic path to success. He did this while dealing with the physical and psychological impacts of dealing with a Traumatic Brain Injury that went undiagnosed for 15 years.

Spirit of Caring Month with Avalon Bay

During the month of September VOTR welcomes employees and execs from Avalon Bay for multiple days of service. These volunteers will paint, build cubbies, and lend their carpentry skills to help make VOTR living spaces for veterans to look even more wonderful than they currently do!  VOTR is so grateful for the spirit of service, caring, and generosity of sponsors like Avalon Bay!  Who have you served today?

Mentoring Program Training

August 24th, September 16th

Mentors of the Welcome Back Incarcerated Veterans Mentoring Program are required to complete 7 hours of training before being assigned to mentor a veteran involved with the criminal justice system. VOTR hosts periodic training sessions for newly joining mentors once the have successfully completed their mentor application and required screenings. Contact the VOTR office to join us this month!  We are so excited to work with our second cohort of mentors and mentees.

Spirit of Caring Month with Volunteers from a large major real estate development corporation combined with two cookouts for veterans and volunteers

Dates: 9/21, 9/23, 9/26, and 9/30.  This is an opportunity for conversation, community service,  food enjoyment and encouragement for the veteran population. If your group would like to host one of our monthly veteran meal efforts please reach out to us at info@vetsontherise.org.
